Cardiff Metropolitan University: Overview
Cardiff Metropolitan University, known in Welsh as Prifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd, is based in Cardiff, Wales. It was previously called the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), also referred to in Welsh as Prifysgol Athrofâu Cymru, Caerdydd (PACC).
Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD)
- Founded in 1865 as the Cardiff School of Art, making it the university’s oldest founding department.
- Based in a modern facility on the university’s Llandaff Campus.
- Since September 2012, its teaching, research, and enterprise work has been organized around 13 subject areas:

Separation from the University of Wales
- UWIC officially severed its ties with the University of Wales and adopted its current name, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in November 2011.
- The institution now issues degrees under its own name rather than through the University of Wales.
- Even after this change, some institutional connections persisted:
- Both universities shared a Pro Vice Chancellor of Research until summer 2012.
- Cardiff Met staff continued for a time to serve as moderators for the University of Wales’s overseas franchised degree programs.
- International students are charged a uniform tuition rate regardless of their country of origin.
Leadership Overlap
Between 2004 and 2007, Tony Chapman held a dual role: Vice Chancellor of Cardiff Metropolitan University (then UWIC) and Senior Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Wales.
