The origins of the university can be traced back to the Portsmouth and Gosport Schools of Science and Arts. It opened in 1870 and is funded by subscriptions. Technical education (including science-based subjects) later became the responsibility of local authorities, and the local government established the Portsmouth City Technical College in 1894 to perform this function.
